The Situation
Ecosystem-based marine spatial planning is, by definition, reliant on access to disparate and dynamic data streams. Research in support of CMSP encompasses a range of scientific disciplines resulting in a variety of both qualitative and quantitative data types. To date there has been no design for a data network in MA to support this variety of data over an integrated networked structure.
The Project
This MOP sponsored study developed a conceptual design with recommendations for implementing an integrated data network (focusing on leveraging common web technologies to facilitate data accessibility while enabling authoritative sources to share their data).
Role in Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning
The study is guiding the design of an integrated data network to support Massachusetts’ marine spatial planning and planning in the northeastern region.
Challenges & Applications
Implementation of a data network in MA has the potential to demonstrate how local data networks can be leveraged by and inform regional and national efforts. Implementation of the data network can be limited by current technology, but such challenges are being overcome through continued technological advancements.
