Integrated Data Network | Data Network Prototypes

Intro

The Situation

An integrated data network is an essential tool for resource managers, businesses, planners, scientists and others, however, there are few compelling demonstrations of several key data network design concepts that test and present the proposed technology.

The Project

As a result of MOP’s Data Network Conceptual Design study, two prototypes of data network applications are currently being developed and tested. These prototypes are testing and demonstrating the use of common internet search and mapping technology (such as Google) to discover and display ocean data.  They are also being used to test different integration techniques for a variety of data streams.  By implementing these demonstrations the technology and thought processes can be tested and refined, while the advantages of the data network can be showcased, generating interest and support for development of a full-fledged integrated data network.

Role in Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning

These prototypes directly inform development of future data portals, advance the technology and promote opportunities for broader application at regional and national levels.

Challenges & Applications

Prototype development and trial is limited by funding levels and current technology, but further advancements can be achieved with additional support.    Prototype development can also be limited by the appropriate availability of data (traditional barriers to data sharing need to be overcome). These prototypes are scalable for regional and national applicability.

Prototypes are required to test and refine current technology and demonstrate the value of shared data for coastal and marine spatial planning.
