Integrated Data Network | Massachusetts Ocean Resource Information System (MORIS)

The Massachusetts Ocean Resource Information System (MORIS) is an online data mapping tool, that uses an open source mapping engine platform (GeoServer) to provide access to spatial data pertaining to the Massachusetts coastal zone.  Users can interact with various political, socioeconomic and environmental resource data layers, quickly create and share maps, and download data for use in a suite of Geographic Information System (GIS) clients, including ArcMap and Google Earth.

It is a cornerstone application for the geographic understanding of marine spatial planning in Massachusetts.  Continued enhancements to the system will increase its efficiency and interoperability, which is the ability of the system to link to outside authoritative data sources maintained by other government, academic, or nonprofit organizations — making it a highly efficient and effective tool for integrating and distributing data and maps for marine spatial planning.

SeaPlan sponsored updates in 2011 and 2012 and led a development team that included staff from the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZM), the Massachusetts Office of Geographic Information (MassGIS) and Applied Science Associates (ASA).

MORIS is one of a several online data management and mapping tools developed or informed by SeaPlan that compliment national priorities for marine planning and provide a ground-up approach to data sharing, integration and management that can inform national objectives. Other tools include the Northeast Ocean Data Portal where SeaPlan is spearheading another private-public partnership development team. SeaPlan also contributes to development of the National Information Management System (NIMS) and the Multi-purpose Marine Cadastre. For more information contact Scott Geis, SeaPlan Project Manager.
