Policy & Management | Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force (CMSP)

Intro

The Situation

As the Nation contemplates its ever-increasing requirements from coastal and ocean waters it needs a comprehensive policy to guide the wise use and protection these shared resources.

The Project

The White House Council on Environmental Quality created the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force and charged it with developing recommendations to inform the national ocean planning initiative.

Role in Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning

The Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force recommends the framework, timeline and goals for national ocean management planning policy to President Obama.

Challenges & Applications

Aligning national goals with state/regional needs and expectations will be a challenge but experiences and lessons from MA could give the NE region a head start.  Securing adequate funding to develop science-based, stakeholder informed ocean plans at a regional scale poses considerable challenges.

Effective management of great lakes and coastal ocean resources is paramount to achieve long-term health of these ecosystems in order to sustain our Nation’s economy and strengthen global security.
