The Situation
The Oceans Act of 2008 required the formation of the Ocean Science Advisory Council and specified its composition.
The Project
The Massachusetts Ocean Partnership provided technical and logistical support for most SAC meetings, including substantive input via science projects and meeting notifications and summaries.
Role in Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning
By definition, a coastal and marine spatial planning effort must be science based, the SAC helped shape the extent and breadth of science supporting the initial planning effort.
Challenges & Applications
The primary challenge was for the SAC to determine the minimum information required to make sound ocean planning decisions for the first iteration of the MA Ocean Plan.
