The Situation
There are a variety of tools that can be used to inform decision making, but there is little guidance on the appropriate integration and utilization of these tools into the planning process.
The Project
The MOP team inventoried and evaluated the various decision support tools, ecosystem and economic models, and indicators that are available for use in EBM. The team developed a catalogue of these tools and made recommendations about their use within a generic EBM planning framework. The team also recommended tools for use specifically in the development and evaluation of the MA OMP.
Role in Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning
Decision support tools, models, and indicators can be utilized to inform and evaluate potential tradeoff decisions that are inherent in CMSP. Most of these tools are reliant on the availability of reliable and accurate data, preferably through an integrated data network.
Challenges & Applications
This description of tools and recommendations for their use can inform the design of ecosystem based planning processes in other areas.
